Engineering course substitutions
Unless stated otherwise, the substitutions below are approved by the School of Engineering Associate Director for Education for the year they apply to only, they will not carry over to future years.
Important note: Unless otherwise specified, course-level prerequisites must be satisfied before attempting approved substitutions.
2027 Course Substitutions
- ENGN3226 will be offered for the last time in Semester 1, 2026. From Semester 1, 2027, the course will be replaced with another course ENGN3350 Principles of Information Engineering.
- ENGN4537 will be offered for the last time in Semester 2, 2026. From Semester 2, 2027, the course will be replaced with another course ENGN4430 Applied AI for Electronic Systems.
2026 Course Substitutions
- ENGN8536 will be offered for the last time in Semester 2, 2025. From Semester 2, 2026, the course will be replaced with another course ENGN8122 Intelligent Autonomous Systems.
- If you are expecting to complete your program in 2026 and ENGN8536 is required, you can take ENGN8122.
- ENGN8120 will be offered for the last time in Semester 2, 2025.
- If you are expecting to complete your program in 2026 and ENGN8120 is required, you can take ENGN Elective at 8000-level.
- ENGN4627/6627 was offered in Semester 2, 2025. From 2026, the course is moving to Semester 1. Next offering will be Semester 1, 2026.
2025 Course Substitutions
- ENGN3902 will not be offered in Semester 2, 2025. In Semester 2, 2026, the course may be replaced with another course in the Environmental systems major.
- If you are expecting to complete your program in 2025 and ENGN3902 is required, you can take ENGN3516 or ENGN Elective at 3000/4000-level.
- If your study plan allows, you can take ENGN3410 in Semester 2, 2026.
- To minimise impact on pre-requisites for follow on courses in the Environmental major, make sure to take ENGN3903 in Semester 2, 2025 as it helps to satisfy pre-requisite for ENGN4902 in Semester 1, 2026.
- ENGN4338 was offered in Semester 1, 2024. From 2025, the course is moving to Semester 2. Next offering will be Semester 2, 2025.
- If you are expecting to complete your program in Semester 1 2025 and ENGN4338 is required, you can take ENGN4902 (pre-reqs waived for students doing Aerospace major), ENGN3224, or ENGN Elective at 3000/4000-level.
- ENGN4547 was offered in Semester 2, 2024. From 2025, the course is moving to Semester 1. Next offering will be Semester 1, 2025.
Teach-out plans
Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) - Major in Electronics & Communication Systems (ELCO)
The teach-out program for the Electronics and Communications major involves six of the current compulsory courses (ENGN2218, ENGN2228, ENGN3539, ENGN4213, ENGN4536 and ENGN4625). It also contains two courses commonly found in electronics and communications curriculum, where the replacement courses have similar learning outcomes (see note below).

Master of Engineering in Renewable Energy (NERNE)
The teach-out program for the NERNE will involve running all the current compulsory courses until the end of 2026. There is no change to the student study rules.
Master of Engineering in Mechatronics (NMECH)
The teach-out program for the NMECH will involve running all the current compulsory courses until the end of 2026. There is no change to the student study rules.
Master of Engineering in Digital Systems and Telecommunications (NDSTE)
The teach-out program for the NDSTE will involve running all of the current compulsory courses, except for the two listed below:

Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) - Major in Mechanical & Material Systems (MMSY)
The teach-out program for the MMSY consists of three of the current compulsory courses (ENGN3601, ENGN3331 and ENGN4212), a one-for-one replacement (ENGN4810 to replace ENGN4027). It also contains two courses commonly found in mechanical engineering programs (i.e. control systems and fluid mechanics - see note below).

To remove any doubt, if you still have ENGN4511 and ENGN4615 to complete (as per the old rules), you will need to complete both ENGN3223 and ENGN3224 to ensure that you have completed the required 48 units of coursework for the Major.
Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) - Major in Biomedical Systems (BMSY)
The teach-out program for the BMSY involves six of the current compulsory courses (BIOL 1004, plus ENGN 2217, 2222, 3820, 4810, and 4820). It also contains two courses commonly found in biomedical engineering (control systems and fluid mechanics – see note below).

ENGN3223 – Control Systems
ENGN3223 will be modified to have application streams appropriate to the different majors. Specifically, examples and exercises are readily available across electrical, chemical, mechanical, and biological systems.
ENGN3224 – Fluid Mechanics & Heat Transfer
ENGN3224 will be augmented with a suite of alternate lectures in the last two weeks of semester to provide information on discipline-specific topics such as biomedical surfaces and their lubrication and application in joints.
