Enrolment
Whether you’re new to ANU or continuing your studies, enrolling is an important part of each study period. This page explains what you need to do to enrol, key dates to remember, and where to get help.
It is every student’s responsibility to manage their own study program. This includes enrolling in appropriate courses on time, to meet program and course requirements.
Failure to meet the enrolment deadlines may have academic consequences.
Don’t delay! We highly recommend you enrol in your courses as soon as possible.
Enrolling in courses
All students must enrol in their courses by the ‘last day to enrol’ date, which is specified in the ‘Class’ information for each course of your program.
Further information can be found here: Enrolment
Permission codes
Permission approval allows a student to enrol in a course despite not meeting the listed requisites. Permission is granted only in exceptional cases, as requisites ensure students have the necessary background knowledge and skills to be successful in the course.
Important: The permission code process is managed by CSS Student Services. If you contact Course Conveners, many will redirect you back to Student Services to follow the correct process. We recommend following the Student Services process first. If convenor approval is needed, we will let you know.
For courses not offered by CSS, please contact the relevant College
Eligibility
You can apply for a permission code if:
- You meet the listed course and/or program requisites through previous ANU study but cannot self-enrol in ANUHub.
- The course requires “department consent” and you’ve met all other published requirements.
- When your program required you to complete a specific course because it was a prerequisite for a higher-level course, but that prerequisite course has since been discontinued, is no longer listed as a prerequisite for the higher-level course, and the higher-level course does not list a replacement course on the CSS website under Course substitutions. For example, some undergraduate Engineering students were required to complete PHYS1013 under the 2019–2021 rules, but the higher-level ENGN courses now list PHYS1101/PHYS1001 as the prerequisite instead, with no replacement listed for PHYS1013.
- You are a high-achieving student (GPA ≥ 6.5, no academic integrity issues) who has completed at least 48 units at ANU and can demonstrate strong results (Distinction or higher) in related courses.*
- You have an approved study plan for an Honours (1-year) program, signed by the relevant academic delegate.**
- You have completed the requisites through prior formal learning or informal learning. Please see Course Credit & Exemption for documentation requirements. Noting permission to enrol into a course does not constitute assessment or approval for course credit/exemption.
If you have failed or not attempted a prerequisite course, you would typically not be permitted to enrol in the subsequent course unless there is a strong academic or compassionate and compelling justification.
CSS Permission Code application portal for Semester 1 2026 will open 9:00 AM, 8 December 2025 and close 2:00 PM, 2 March 2026.
For non-standard sessions (e.g. Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter), please refer to the “Last day to enrol” date on the Programs and Courses website.
Applications will not be accepted after the closing date. If you wish to enrol after the deadline, please refer to the below Late Enrolment process.
Please note this portal is NOT for:
- individual project course registration - submit project registration for individual project courses here.
- MATH and ENVS Special Topic courses - these are managed by the respective Schools. Please contact them directly for enrolment assistance.
- Conditional Permission Code requests. If you have an interim grade (DA, PX, RP) for a prerequisite course and your final grade is released before Monday of Week 3, you may submit a Late Enrolment Application instead.
Permission Code Application Portal
I've failed the prerequisite course. Can I reattempt the prerequisite and enrol concurrently in the later course in the same semester?
Typically, no. Requesting to enrol into a course concurrently with a course prerequisite will not be considered unless the course is explicitly listed as a co-requisite or unless there is a significant academic and/or compassionate and compelling justification.
Does permission to enrol allow me to enrol in more than 24 units per each study period?
Permission to enrol does not permit you to exceed 24 units in a semester. To do so, you must submit a formal overload application. For further information, see: ANU – Overload Your Enrolment
Late enrolment
The guide below outlines relevant dates, processes and key principles that will be used to consider late enrolment requests. This process applies to all students wishing to add or swap CSS courses (COMP & ENGN coded). For SCOM, ENVS, and MATH coded courses, you can submit a late enrolment application via this application portal. For non-CSS courses, please check with the relevant Colleges.
Given the short turnaround time for this process, you are strongly advised to apply only for courses where you meet the prerequisites. Applications for courses where requisites are not met are likely to be declined. Please note that you may include up to four COMP and ENGN-coded courses in your late enrolment application; however, only one application will be accepted per student per semester.
Please be advised that the Late Enrolment procedure is NOT APPLICABLE for a student who is applying for overloading, for a 3rd attempt, or to drop a course. Please contact CSS Student Services if you have any questions on this matter.
