A talented Australian National University (ANU) computing expert has been recognised by the Australian Academy of Science for advancing scientific research.
Associate Professor Liang Zheng has been awarded the 2026 Brian Anderson Medal for his pioneering contributions to representation learning in artificial intelligence and computer vision.
Associate Professor Zheng’s work focuses on representation learning – a key area of artificial intelligence that explores how complex data, such as images, can be translated into formats that machines can understand and interpret.
His research has led to pioneering methods for improving how AI systems learn from data, particularly in complex and changing environments.
He has developed widely used data augmentation methods that improve how images are represented in complex environments, boosting AI performance in areas like crop disease detection, fish classification, surgical robotics, and speech understanding.
Associate Professor Zheng has also released influential datasets and algorithms for recognising, segmenting, and tracking objects across multiple cameras and environments.
These contributions are advancing computer vision research and real-world applications, such as smart city technologies and autonomous systems.
“Brian Anderson’s commitment to fundamental research has always been inspiring, and this recognition motivates me to carry forward that same spirit in my own work,” says Associate Professor Zheng.
The Brian Anderson Medal recognises early-career researchers who have made significant advances in information and communications technology (ICT). It honours the legacy of Brian Anderson AC FAA FTSE FRS, a leading figure in Australian science and engineering and Emeritus Professor at ANU.
The Academy’s 2026 Honorific Awards celebrate 23 exceptional scientists across disciplines and career stages, highlighting the depth, rigour, and impact of Australian scientific research.
