The Australian National University (ANU) campus was buzzing on Saturday 29 March as prospective students explored their future at Open Day 2025.

The rainy weather didn’t deter the crowds, who turned out in large numbers. Future students and their families were welcomed by a lively environment filled with opportunities to learn about university life, chat with current students, and meet our expert academics.

The ANU College of Systems and Society occupied Level 5 of the Marie Reay Building for exhibitions, demos, and a student project showcase; as well as ran campus tours to show off our buildings and facilities.

A Commodore 4032 (circa 1980) displayed demos alongside much more modern technologies, including an AI and robotics display and the ‘Panic’ AI art installation.

‘Tappy’ the robot dog entertained delighted crowds with its moves, while Nao the humanoid robot posed for pictures.

A collection of longicorn beetles were on display – the elusive culprit behind snow gums dying in huge numbers.

Visitors could try their hand at drawing what AI looks like, solving KenKen mathematics puzzles, mapping out how Marvel superheroes and villains get their powers, playing virtual reality games or a Pacific climate adventure board game.

Current students showcased recent projects developed with industry as part of their degrees, including work on a flood warning system, using satellites to track dust storms, and a relativity-themed escape room.

Over in the Cultural Centre, student-run clubs were on display. ANU Rocketry bought along their Garawaηa rocket, while ANU Formula Sport and the ANU Solar Racing teams both showcased their cars.
